My Breaks Squeal
28. May 2011 at 10:45

Hi, I have an Xreg 2.5td and about a year ago I had new brake discs and pads fitted all round. For the last few weeks my brakes just squeal when I break and when I'm just rolling forward.....anyone got any ideas?

Cheers, Derek

It could be that the pins/springs need re-seating or it could be cheap pads and disks with no 'anti squeal' backing on the pads.
Omega's are heavy on the brakes and need good quality components.

Take the pads out and give them and the caliper a good clean with a wire brush and brake cleaner  Thumbs Up!

Smear a little bit of copperslip grease on the BACK and edge of the pads and put it all back together  Thumbs Up!
Just make sure the disc and friction surface of the pads are grease free  Wink Grin

Some pads kick off more dust then others so give them a blast with a jetwash every now and then  Thumbs Up!

Some pads just squeal, including trade club pads. Could just be the quality of the pad material, or the pads osilating if they don't seat perfectly in the caliper. Corrosion on the piston to pad surface may cause a high spot and the pad rocks in the caliper at such a rate as to squeal. Some I've seen the paint on the pad back had cracked, corrosion set in and then the paint swelled up from the rust underneath. The pad then wobbled in the caliper when inspected. Stop the wobble, pad seated correctly, mo more sqeal. But only one of the four pads squealed in that instance...

Decent shims can help, made from softer material (similar to copper for example) absorbs the resonance.
