Yeah, the plod ones, esp with LSD (lowers gearing) is a hell of a beast for acceleration, if you can keep traction, and don't destroy the clutch in the process...

Hardest part is changing gear smoothly and quickly enough to keep the momentum going. Roll Eyes Like me, it really doesn't like being rushed through the gears.

Have found mine swift enough to make motorbicyclists take a second look. Lips Sealed

Tonight on an empty dual carriageway i had just joined from a roundabout, i had a T plate 328 tailgaiting very close. I thought 'we'll soon sort you out' and hit the sport mode.

I am gutted to say that from 30 to 80mph (at which point i levelled off my speed) the BMW stuck to my bumper like glue, easily gaining on me before speeding off into the distance, grinning, like i was stood still Sad

maybe she is still not running at full potential. I need to drive another and compare.

On a T plate would make it an E36 328.

Back in the day my mate had a E36 325 convertible, and that went the the proverbial!!! I'd be surprised if even a manual 3.2 mig would keep pace with a 328!  Undecided

T plate would more than likely be an E46, they were introduced on an S plate.

I did that once with a motorbike in my 3.0 MV6 ex plodder, he was so stunned that I was still with him at 120 (km/h) of course Wink

An e46 330ci convertible tried it on with me for a series of traffic light dashes. He didn't get in front which pleased me Smiley

Yeah, a manual 328 should beat an auto 3.2 Omega.

As well as the loses in the autobox, for a wide speed range, the auto gears are too long for those sorts of silly beggers.

yep.. but a manual 3.2 with some mods!! can really surprise people..   Smiley

L.O.L i remeber when i was working for l.a.s as a trainee paramedic they had two plod spec omegas and clutches used to give up at an amazing rate... Thumbs Up!

If its a coupe could most likely be a E36 as they went upto V plates, but if saloon/estate than most probably be E46  Thumbs Up!

Don't feel bad about it James. I had an E36 328i Coupe for 3 months while i still had the Beastie. It was an impulse buy, sold it 3 months later & re insured the Beastie but i'm loathe to admit they will out accelerate a V6 Mig on low & mid range pull..they are pretty frickin' quick. I took it to one of the Chester day meets so some of you will have seen it.

Having owned both at the same time i reckon the Mig would have longer legs but you'd have to reach silly speeds to find out!!! Guy. Thumbs Up!

Yup the E36 will be half a tonne lighter.

Also there you can fit the inlet manifold from a 325i which gives another 20bhp iirc.

hi guys,

been reading this thread with interest.

i dont normally race but one night i came up to a red light next to a passat. long straight ahead. we burnt off and neither of us got away. it was exactly the same. i have no idea what spec or engine he'd got.

however, the 0-60 time on my 2.5 v6 is 9.5 as it's auto. so that begs the question: what can my car beat?????

A lot and remember, the Miggy will be a lot better top end that many things. My Astra Van for example rapid and it hits 136 MPH with absolute ease, but it's limited (only due to tyres) the limiter will be removed soon though. The thing is, things have moved on so much in the past few years, the 2.5 V6 in an Omega has 170 BHP IIRC, my Astra Van emphasise the word van there has 185 BHP as standard (remapped from the factory), it then has a custom exhaust system and it's rolling roaded at 205.7 BHP thats a 1.9 4 pot diesel! Then there's the beemer, 0-62 in 7.9 seconds two tonne of car with a 3.0 diesel with 231 bhp. Things these days are just leaps and bounds ahead of what stuff was back in the 90's.

You think today the equivalent of a 90's 328i (193 BHP) is a 330i which is pushing out 272 BHP now, that's just a bog standard 3.0 N/A engine. The next Astra VXR promises to have 295 BHP, that's more than any Omega ever had, and the Omega was Vauxhall's flagship.

Ive got an ex plod with the LSD and various other Mods, compared to my previous MV6 manual the accelaration is blistering - It surprises a variety of much more exotic machinery

I still get the odd Corsa/Saxo trying it but tend not to bother with them - dont want to embarrase them infront of their girlfriends Grin Grin Grin Thumbs Up!
