Brake upgrade
21. Aug 2011 at 14:14

Hi all, did I once read something about GTO or something brakes being a straight swap for the omega brakes? calipers and disks? front and/or rears?
Seems my front disks have warped, judder under braking is bad, pads are low so looks like disks and pads are needed so perfect time to swap if they do indeed fit.

Thanks  Thumbs Up!

Just replace like for like, they're more than capable of stopping your car. Trade Club pads & discs are around £100, excellent value for money, & will take you no time at all to fit.  Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up!

Ahh that would be far far too easy  Grin

Just upgraded to 17'' wheels and thought it'd look slightly better with bigger calipers, also I do a huge amount of motorway driving so an improvement in stopping power would also be a welcomed feeling

Cheers  Thumbs Up!

Obviously, if its for styling, thats a different matter.  But for road use, the standard setup is more than adequate.  I'd only consider changing if it was for track use.

Concentrate on keeping them in good condition will give better results than anything where they have been neglected enough for the pads to get low, and the discs to deform.

Partly styling, partly better braking, the larger the pad surface to the disk, the less effort required in braking, like wise with pistons, GTO has two,OEM has one.

I'd say my pads are two thirds of the way through their life, so not completely shot, lately I've had to hit the anchors a few times, now I have a judder under medimum braking so obviously warped rotas sadly.

Thumbs Up!

Thanks for that - that must have been what I saw a while ago, assuming the 'GTO' is the UK's Monaro?
If so I'm on the hunt for some monaro calipers!  Thumbs Up!

and the rears?
Huge stopping power at the front with standard at the back is probably going to give a tendency for the back to want to lock up.  Undecided Undecided Undecided

Rears will remain standard, may swap to monaro calipers if they too are a straight swap though.

If i encounter the back stepping out then I will have to look into Bias valves (considering the ABS) but I can't imagine any problems cropping up as it's not like I'm sticking on a set of 8pot calipers with 350mm rotas.

Not sure about the omega but a massive percentage of braking at high speed is at the front of most cars anyhow.

Thumbs Up!

Not a lot of braking is from the rear, my pads lasted about 150k  Grin Grin

That said, putting new pads on the rear on the 3.0, it felt noticeable improvement.

Depends though, if that extra power is going to cause the TC to be used a lot more, which could cause pads to be eaten fast

Do you break V6's as often as TheBoy? Then you need tunnie's towing services, recovery costs are just the humiliation of being towed by 2/3's of an engine

2/3rds of pads used puts them beyond their useful life IMHO.  Its not a competition how much you can get out of them.

Warped discs implies cheap, nasty pattern discs. I've not yet managed to warp GM ones, thus gone back to them from an experimentation with marginally cheaper, pattern ones.

Anyone who has been in my MV6 when I've been testing brakes will know the weak point is the tyre/tarmac interface.

As said, if its for styling alone, thats a different kettle of fish, but for actual performance, a well maintained GM standard setup will be far more satisfactory than less well maintained non standard ones.

You don't know if they were changed before you got it Wink. Also you lack TC, which hammers the rear pads Roll Eyes

Like the bike, if you had a proper bike, the rear brakes help provide stability, esp in bends, as well as braking capacity.  You have noticed this on your Mum's estate once you serviced the rears.

Mark changed my rear pads recently (genuine Vx), made a tremendous difference to the braking.

I have a couple of GTOs - quite simply, their brakes are more weedy than a standard Omega. Avoid.

brake upgrades MUST be done on a "whole-car" basis. Imagine trying to explain to the judge how you have 150% bigger brakes on the front, but have not changed the rear at all.

Have you thought about pad coefficient of friction, piston diameter, brake effective radius, front-rear weight balance, brake factor, master cylinder size ? etc, etc, etc
