I have heard that a missfire or a blown head gasket can wreck cats. Can anyone throw any light on this? How likely is it , and does it need to be a prolonged situation before damage occurs?

Unburnt fuel can contaminate the cat.

... Hence if the ecu detects a miss fire for too long, on DBW cars certainly, it shuts down the injector on that cylinder.
