auxiliar water pump

The auxiliary water pump that is attached to the rad has become very noisy. Do you know what is it for? Can I disconnect it or should I replace?
Thanks for your comments.

it's there to prevent "afterboiling", whereby the coolant temperature rises after engine shut-down.

required.
