Just a drilling to channel exhaust gases out of the back of the head, through the valve, and a channel in the casting that the valve sits on, then another  drilling in the intake side of the head to take the flow into a channel within the inlet manifold.  I guess any part of this pathway could become partly or completely soot-blocked, if the engine has been run for a long while in poor condition.

Seems to me most likely that you have a wiring fault.  The EGR can be blanked off in terms of gasflow and not result in error codes as long as the wiring is still plugged into the valve.  Since you have put a new valve on (assuming that it works), this points to a wiring fault.  I think.

Which codes have come back, just the EGR?
