Fitting carin sat nav.
19. Sep 2008 at 16:02

Fitted carin sat nav today. No power getting to it only 5 wires in male conector 6 in female conector. There is a loose red wire though could this be  the live wire thats pulled out of the male conector if so can i just splice it into the female red wire with scotchlock. Thanks.

Yes, that adds to missing connector.  Std pins from radio are ideal (Most car audio shops will sell, as will Dave DND).

Not sure Hellfrauds would sell.  Craplins might, as would any car audio place...

Sat Nav now working with brown lead atached to courtesy light as Jules sugests for testing purposes. But when i conect it to the brown wire on the 6 pin plug it doesnt could i just screw a hole behind  the kick panel and put a self tapper in to earth it. Also wheres the best place to get an upto date disc & updated firmware disc. Thanks.

I used a 0v stud up above the kick panel on both of mine.

Re firmware, what hardware is yours (from System Info menu), I have v2.3 for SY581.

For maps, try either dealer, or Navteq, quoting exactly the model you have.

Running v2.0 firmware then.

The hardware failures are worrying.

Updating to v2.3 firmware, as far as I can see, offers one new feature - it prepopulates the town when entering destination.

The update to firmware v2.3 used to be done by dealers, but apparently they can no longer get the update disk.  That and the fact that nobody appears to support this system (Philips sold their automotive arm to Siemens, who sold to VDO, and who have just recently sold to someone else (name escapes me)) means that I guess its OK to provide the firmware.  Unless anyone knows different.

So will cost you 1 blank CD, and 10mins of your time.

The hardware error may be due to using CDRs for map disk - does it occasionally spit the disk out?
