Autobox filter
08. Dec 2009 at 20:25

I need to renew the autobox oil. With help from the forum I know there is a filter in the autobox, the filter will cost me  60.63+vat. Ouch!! (TC card price) from the main dealer.Does anybody know if this filter is made of metal, plastic,or textile,I understand it's possible to rinse the filter clean and re-use it.I think this would be ok with metal or plastic but  textile could be dodgy.Problem is it's as much as a 4 day wait from order to delivery,so if i'm going to have to order a replacement to do the job the info would be most appreciated Thumbs Up! Thumbs Up!

Theres a chap who sells the filter kit, including two sump gaskets, on the Autobahnstormers site and somehwere around half of the dealer price.  Perhaps someone better placed could assist with a link?

the filter is paper and its not worth cleaning them any way. to refil the box invest in a syringe. looks like a grease gun but has a flexy pipe on it get them from screw fix direct makes filling the box easy.

Get your filter and gaskets from these folks ... way cheaper than Vx ... and recommended by autobahnstormers.

I have slept since the last time I did one but I don't remember it being paper.

Nope, definately not paper! Also was told by a very knowledgable person on here that he's never seen a blocked filter and has never replaced one, just cleaned the original. If he ever saw a blocked filter then he wouldn't bother carrying on, he'd replace the gearbox as it would be totally FUBAR.

If you speak to JPAT, ask for the oof discount, as mentioned in parts for sale sticky.

The big syringe's are ok for a top up, but if your buying something, I would get a garden 'killaspray' for a couple of quid....

fill with atf, pump up the pressure, release the trigger, sit back and watch the box fill  Thumbs Up!

The filter media is a fabric and washes out well with paraffin or a similar cleaning agent.

Its there to do little more than stop big bits getting into the oil system.

washed mine out, no problem, there was nout in it anyway... it aint paper. And i'm told you can get away with a sealent instead of a gasket, prefer the gaskets myself. Also Dex 3 can be had much cheaper via a factors. Fuchs titan 4000  being a good choice but only comes in a 5 litre can i beleive, so you need 2 5litre cans, where as the vx stuff can be had in 1litre bottles so you can usually take unopened bottles back.

Having said that dealers have a habit of running out of Dexron 3, saying its been super seeded by Dexron 6 which is said to be a far superior oil. But is it ok in the omega box? I used 3 myself.

ps, dealers usually have to order the filter in ime, which is another reason to clean the old one out. Its really not a problem.
