Earth lead on battery
19. Feb 2010 at 21:57

I got a message on the computer today saying headlight was out,so i lifted the bonnet to see if it needed a wiggle....when i put my hand down to the back of the headlight(Battery side) i noticed that the earth lead was red hot!! Shocked
It was not the brown wire but the one which is encased in the plastic, nearest to the front of the car....

Is this meant to get hot!??  Shocked

check all earth wires under the battery and the one in the corner next to the light and battery, wire will only be hot if there is a high drain on the circuit, also check that the battery is not getting hot aswell.

No, should not get hot, but is a definate tell tale sign that you have a dodgy earth joint somewhere. Be very meticulous when cleaning up the connections at each end, and the crimped joints are known to fail, which could cause a similar fault.

Give it utmost priority in sorting it out, and I would advise NOT to use the car until you have done so.

Once you have found the bad connection or dodgey crimp put vaseline/petroleum jelly on all the earthing points, prevents corrosion & water ingress in the future.
(Do not use grease) Thumbs Up!
