Apr 2011 at 08:47 Hi All, not been on for a while, but I'm considering getting rid of the mondeo and changing for an Omega Estate Diesel. What are they like on fuel? bearing in mind mondeo is doing 50+mpg. Are the engines reliable? What do I need to look at when buying one? Thanks

I run a 2.2 DTi estate - which I think is probably a little more economical than the 2.5 TD BMW engine, on the other hand is not very lively (to put it mildly!!) and cannot as far as I know be tuned much (the 2.5 TD BMW engine can be chipped for more power tho' I seem to think it's not recommended for auto gearboxes which are not strong enough for the full fat version - sure someone will along soon to correct me if needed).

I get 40+ mpg driven fairly gently and that seems to match other people's experience. I think the Omega is bigger and heavier than a Mondeo so probably a fair return.

I am very happy with the car which will swallow a huge amount of luggage and suits what I need well - don't know how I will replace it really.

Biggest problem for you I think will be finding a good car as most have done plenty of miles by now - which I think the engine will handle but the miles do take their toll on the car.

Apr 2011 at 12:31 The TD autobox saps power and mpg. The manuals (both 2.2 and 2.5) should return nearly 50mpg on a run, but day to day will probably be in the high 30s or low 40s...

Apr 2011 at 15:34 I usually get in the region of 32-35 mpg on mine (even on a run)... The only time I got better was when I kept the speed below 55 and was on a run when I got mid 40's

What are both engines like for servicing? I tend to do about 40K a year in the car......

Apr 2011 at 13:38 the 2.5 is the beemer engine. Certainly wouldn't buy one simply because its BMW - their engines aren't that great . That said it is the smooth of the 2, but for UK cars, will be the older one (as the 2.2DTi replaced it in the UK)

May 2011 at 18:57 if its fuel miles you want stick with the ford as the omega wont get near 50 mpg never mind 50 plus.and if anyone says its can they most be being towed themselfs or drive at 25 mph but it will tow well and its easier to work on than your ford.

Indeed Just done the fuel filter on mine, wasn't a genuine VX one but I think it'd been in there a little while!

Friend of mine has had his for 8 years now, I think it is, and probably done 100k in that time.

He's changed the exhaust, the rear brake pads, and the oil twice (oil filter once)... and still gets 800 miles out of a tank.

He is a jammy get, however, generally speaking.

Definately go for a manual ........

They tow reasonably well, though that BMW lump has got to be kept 'on song' whilst towing.
A disappointing 22 mpg is all you're going to get in this mode.

Ratified by several members, here's our proven fuel consumption figures:
Locally 33 mpg
Spirited cross-country dash 40 mpg
Steady 70mph motorway cruising 44 mpg
Towing 22 mpg

Routine engine servicing:
Engine oil/filter-change every 4500 miles absolute max.
